What are Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers?
Hyaluronic Acid is a compound that we have naturally in our bodies. Approximately 50% is located within the skin dermis where it provides a matrix for other molecules such as collagen and elastin. It’s unique affinity for water allows hydration of the skin, whilst providing volume and elasticity.
Hyaluronic Acid is lost from the skin as we age and this contributes to dehydration, wrinkle formation and skin laxity. Hyaluronic Acid is non allergenic and manufactured using biotechnology. It is degraded by the body over a period of 6 to 12 months.
Juvederm® ULTRA is a range of smooth consistency gels that are injected to fill lines, wrinkles and folds and to restore skin volume and redefine lips.
What can I expect from the treatment?
We will ask you what your problem areas are. Many areas within the face can be treated, most commonly the nasolabial folds, lips and frown lines. Topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the area and allowed to work for 20 minutes.
Using a fine needle, Juvederm® ULTRA is then injected under the skin into the area requiring treatment in a process taking approximately 15 minutes but it can be longer depending on which areas are being treated. Immediate effects are seen. Pricing is calculated according to volume of filler deemed necessary for optimum results.
Will the treatment be uncomfortable?
Pre-treatment anaesthetic cream is used and Juvederm® ULTRA is a product with a very smooth consistency facilitating easy injection. It also contains lidocaine (an anaesthetic agent) to optimise comfort.
How long will it last?
The longevity of the effect can vary between clients depending on the area injected, how much filler is used, age of the client and general lifestyle. The effects can last approximately 6-12 months.
What are the side effects?
Following the procedure, there may be some swelling, bruising, lumps/bumps and redness. Most side effects are mild and moderate and will resolve in a few days of treatment. Every client will be taken through the full consent at the initial consultation and a bespoke treatment plan will be discussed with the opportunity for any questions. A follow up consultation is offered at approximately 2 weeks.

What is ageing and what is Botulinum Toxin A?
Sun damage accounts for 90% of the ageing process. Ageing of the skin comprises skin thinning, volume loss, laxity, pigmentation, dryness and wrinkles. Wrinkles are either “static” (at rest) or “active” (with movement).
Botulinum Toxin A has been used for medicinal and cosmetic reasons for decades and treats conditions such as muscle spasm, muscle twitching, excessive sweating and wrinkles. It is a purified protein derived from the bacterium C. Botulinum. There are 7 subtypes of Botulinum Toxin: type “A” is used for cosmetic purposes. There are several brands of Botulinum Toxin including Azzalure®.
How does it work?
Muscle contraction causes the overlying skin to wrinkle. Muscles require a nerve supply to contract. Botulinum Toxin A temporarily paralyses the nerve supply to these muscles. The muscles then relax and the result is a smoothing out of the “active” wrinkles. “Static” wrinkles will not usually respond to treatment as they are not caused by muscle contraction.
The toxin only has affinity for muscle and so will not spread around the body. All Botulinum Toxin A is removed from the body by 28 days.
How long will it last?
Over time, the nerve regenerates and the muscle contracts once more. The treated lines will begin to reappear. This usually takes between 3 and 6 months. Once injected, it takes several days for the Botulinum Toxin to start working with a maximal effect usually seen at 14 days although everyone is different and this may take longer.
What is the treatment?
We will ask you what you feel the problem areas are. There are three “areas” of the upper face that can be treated: the frown lines, the forehead lines and the crows feet (around the eyes). Each client receives a bespoke treatment plan and the dose of Botulinum Toxin A is calculated based on the size of each muscle and the individual desired effect. This consists of several injections using a very fine needle under the skin into each area.
Pre and Post Treatment photographs are taken and each client is offered a review at 2 weeks whereby any further Botulinum Toxin can be injected if necessary. A minimum of 3 months should elapse before further injections to reduce the theoretical risk of resistance (antibody formation) to the product.
